Sneakerhead Talks: Timmy Smallman
This episode is a little overdue, but we’re back at it again in Melbourne with the Sneakerhead Talks series. Episode 16 features a top lad who loves nothing more than some sexy sneakers, flickering bokeh, and a cold furphy. We initially bonded over photography and since then have met up numerous times to shoot sneakers. It’s with much pleasure that I introduce to you, Timmy Smallman.
A Little About Timmy
Melbourne born and bred in 1981, carpenter during the day, wedding photographer on the weekends. Always have to be creative in some form. My 20s involved a guitar, long thick hair and lots of weed. My 30s involve a camera, a phone and red wine.
Very simple. Denim, plain tee, my Patagonia down hoody and I’m happy. In fact, I’m addicted to Patagonia flannels, might have a small stash hiding somewhere. I’m 35 and really can’t be arsed keeping up with all the streetwear stuff. So I just wear basic sh*t, and it makes me happy.
First Love and Favourite Pair
It all goes back to Michael Jordan. As a kid, I would watch in awe. I think we all did. We all wanted to “be like Mike” and do those amazing things he did. Naturally, you couldn’t miss the sneakers. I wanted them. Mum wouldn’t buy them. We fought and fought until she gave up. Although I didn’t get Jordans, I did score my first pair of Nikes. Nike Air Pegasus ’92. I was so bloody happy!
My all time personal fav pair are the Reebok Kamikaze. Shawn Kemp’s signature shoe. Crazy design for the era. I would never wear them these days, but one of those pairs with personal history and meaningful sh*t. Current favourite pair — Asics Gel Lyte III x Sneaker Freaker ‘Alvin’ because they’re comfy as hell.
Personal Collaboration Ideas
Purple and something oddball like Lotto, Hummel or Mizuno. Gum sole is a must. Two tone flat laces are also integral. Australian themed is a must. Australia and purple hmmm…I’m sure we could make something happen.
Influential Sneaker Persona
Probably Mayor or an afternoon with DJ Khaled. There would have to be lots of booze and medical marijuana. Love him or hate him, I just like DJ Khaled. I couldn’t tell you one of his songs, but his crazy and positive outlook on life is entertaining. Plus he has the best sneaker room I’ve seen.
Best Things About Today’s Sneaker Culture
Instagram. Initially, I joined to meet other sneaker guys/gals. All my friends think I’m an oddball for collecting sneakers, and it’s not like I can have a conversation about a perforated vs. mesh toe box at the pub without sounding like a complete f*ck stick. So I must say it’s been great just to meet up with fellow sneaker people as my sneaker journey has been pretty solitary to date.
Big thank you again to Timmy for taking the time to hang and shoot this Sneakerhead Talks interview. Moving forward, you may remember we recently made an interstate trip to Adelaide for the IMTJS lifestyle event. We took this opportunity to get to know the Adelaide fam a little better and so, for next month’s feature we head to South Australia.
