Jordan Brand is planning to drop the popular Space Jam XI retro later in the year to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the movie it debuted in 1996. The shoes were first brought to the big screen when worn by Michael Jordan in the classic 90’s kid’s movie Space Jam, which also happens to be one of the more memorable movies from my childhood.

Space Jam, for those who missed the 90’s pitched Michael Jordan and the Tune Squad, a group of childhood favourite cartoon characters (along with Bill Murray) against the Monstars. The Monstars are an alien group who stole and absorbed the talent of 90’s basketball stars, Charles Barkley, Shawn Bradley, Patrick Ewing, Larry Johnson and Muggsy Bogues, thus transforming into the huge, basketball dominating versions of themselves.

1996 also marked a return to basketball for Jordan after a brief baseball stint and the year he secured his 4th NBA title and the 1st of his 2nd 3-peat along with the 1997 and 1998 championships.

Since the colourway was last released in 2009 many collectors have seen their icy soles transform slowly to their oxidised yellow appearance that realistically all authentic pairs now display. Along with that the resale value has risen substantially also as the Jordan XI silhouette has risen to the top as a favourite with fellow sneakerheads worldwide.

Personally owning a 2009 release pair of Space Jams I know that I will be doing whatever I can to get my hands on a pair when they drop later in 2016. The hype will be real and the following of this colourway and the symbolic release to mark the 20th anniversary of the film will put this release right in the mix of biggest drops from Jordan Brand this year.

Let us know your thoughts below and if you’ll be chasing a pair to call your own.
